Met up with my Canadian friend F.G that is also interested in riding up Hanoi together. We were all ready to leave today, but it turns out he isn't sure anymore. At the moment, he feels his bike isn't up to par for the trip. When you feel the bike isn't reliable enough, not a great feeling when traveling for so long, and for so far. He will try to getting a better bike, and trade in his current one. Hope it will work out for him, unfortunately the Danh at Saigon Minsk doesn't have bikes for sale at the moment.
I took the day to prepare for the trip. After traveling for 600 kms, wanted to get an oil change....
Beginning of the 1st road trip. Just a short ride from Saigon to Cần Thơ, where the Mekong River about to meet the sea. The ride is merely 165 kms that took roughly over 6 hours. It is strange that it takes so long to travel so little, as we normally assume 100km/h average traveling speed. For distance like this, an 1.5 hours drive?
Fastest I managed to go was maybe just shy of 70 km/h. The highways here are 2 lane traffic, with a wide shoulder on the side. It's stange that bikes are only allow on the shoulder of the hwy, yet there are so many them. Some bikes even goes against traffic,...
For the past week or so, I've been trying to figure how to represent Saigon in a photo. Ever since the bike trip to Cu Chi tunnels, I've been very amazed how hundreds of motorcycles criss crossing traffic without creating minor accidents. It is how alert most riders are, makes it possible to cramp so many motorcycle into so little space.
Now that I managed to have my own bike, it feels even more rewarding to experience everyday traffic Saigon has to offer. This is what Saigon is, no where else have I experience motorcycle craze like this, not in Cambodia, Thailand, China, Macau nor Taiwan.
So...
My friend B.Y from L.A wanted to have some Vietnamese hotpot. So we walked the streets and found some. Unfortunately Google fall to translate anything of the menu properly.
We order the Tuy bỏ something... As I know Bò is beef. But when the hotpot arrived, we have not idea what it is. It taste like internals, not intestine, but something soft and smooth. The soup base is very rich with chinese herbs. For the price and the portions, we believed we possibly order cow member's part. Can someone translate?
Finally, been in Saigon for so long, it is now epic ready. Just picked up my vietnamese motorcycle/driver license today. As usually. I tend to arrive during there lunch time, 12pm - 1pm, where banks and government offices are closed.
Now that all the legal issues are in order, I'm starting to plan for the trip. There are a lot of highways where a motorcycle should avoid. These 100cc can't keep up with the local truck traffic. It's moments like these I miss my 600RR sport bike at home.
Will be trying to avoid the main highways, and look for twisty back roads. I haven't decided when to leave,...
