It’s been a week of non stop research as to where to go from Lhasa. Had a rough idea before arriving here, but planning the details is time consuming. There are two possible paths I would consider from Lhasa.
Westward path from Lhasa heads along the Southern Silk Road, then northward slowly along the borders of China and Central Asia countries, following into Kazakhstan and into Moscow, Russia. The Silk Road is mysterious, hardly travel by anyone. There are jeeps for hire, but I’ve heard the road is really beaten up.
The other path would be heading south, along the Friendship highway between China and it’s southern neighbor of Nepal, view the majestic Mt. Everest before crossing into Nepal and India.
Have giving many thoughts to both paths. As traveling in Vietnam has set the bar. There are no destinations worth going, only the journey there will be worthwhile.
Having been relentless looking for a motorcycle in China, I have almost given up. Each city further west we go, there might be a slight glimpse of making it happen.
In Lhasa, I have seen more licensed motorcycle than other cities of China. It seems this part of the country hasn’t banned licensing motorcycle yet, although there a some riding without license as usually. I have even looked into getting one, pretty good deal for $500usd
Unfortunately, getting a license plate, insurance, and motorcycle license are all somewhat difficult still. Without proper address in Tibet area, not even sure if I can attain one.
This area of China has many road blocks along the highway, anyone traveling will have to show their ID and proper border papers for travel near the borders of China and other countries. I’ve been told the strict restrictions are fair of terrorist entering the country. Therefore China has the man power to setup road blocks along the 2700kms highway, roughly one every hour.
It’s very unlike Vietnam, one can easily cross the country without needing any license, and money gets you through if asked. So without legally being able to ride, it is an idea postponed.
For now, will most likely be traveling along the Silk road, as I have met a friend that is interested at traveling to Ngari (阿里)together. Not sure how we will get there, hopefully a small section at a time.
